Frequently Asked Questions

last update: 29 April 2020

Dear musician,

With great regret we have had to decide to cancel all the projects from NJON that were planned for the coming summer festival. From the press conference on the Covid 19 measures from the Government of the Netherlands of last April 21st, it has become clear that we will not be allowed to continue with several projects. Also, the uncertainty around the possibilities to continue with the other projects has become such that we cannot guarantee to organise these concerts, performances and events in accordance with our quality standards. We are also uncertain about how to guarantee your safe participation as well as that of the public under the current circumstances.

We understand that this may be a great disappointed to you, as much as it is for us, but we hope for your understanding for our decision to put health and safety first.

Already accepted musicians
We will do our utmost best for all musicians who have been accepted for one or more of the NJO projects to find a new place for you in the upcoming NJO projects, without additional auditions. These can be projects at the NJO Winter Tour in January 2021 or projects scheduled for the summer of 2021. We can also inform the musicians who would have participated in the (earlier cancelled) Verdi Requiem project with a scheduled concert on May 3rd 2020, that we are trying to realise this project next year, May 2021. All the musicians selected for this project will be invited for this future Verdi Requiem project without further auditions. As soon as we will start with the planning of NJO projects for the next season you will receive information about the possibilities and you will be invited to reconfirm your participation.

Auditions
Unfortunately, the auditions for percussionists that were planned this spring, will have to be postponed. All percussionists who registered for these auditions will be invited for new live auditions to be planned in autumn. Also, the video auditions for musicians from outside the Netherlands or Belgium (who registered before May 8th) will be cancelled. Musicians from outside the Netherlands or Belgium can register again only for the projects in the summer of 2021.

For now, we wish you and your families and beloved ones good health and sufficient resilience to sustain the current situation. We will prepare for better times in which NJO projects will be possible and will then get back to you. We may contact you in the meantime with plans for some online activities.

On behalf of the NJON team,
Ewout van Dingstee
general and artistic director

I am a reserve musician for the NJO Summer Festival (or Verdi project), will I be invited for the upcoming NJO projects?
Reserve musicians for the NJO Summer Festival 2020 projects (and the Verdi project) normally and according to the NJO audition rules, should play the upcoming auditions again to gain a place in the NJO orchestras. Given the very uncertain situation at the moment we might have to decide otherwise but we assume some auditions will be held in November 2020.

This means that we plan to take stock of the selected musicians (NJO Summer Festival 2020 and Verdi project) and members to find out who is, and who is not able to make the upcoming project. After that we most likely will have auditions in November to fill the empty spots but if, because something unforeseen, having auditions is not possible our reserve musicians are off course the first ones the NJO would ask to join.

If you already have an account you do not need to make a new one, please go to your personal NJO account -> musical data -> application.

What is the application deadline?
Deadline for auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium: 10 March 2020

Auditions will be held for all vacancies remaining after analysing the number of NJO member participants.
To give candidates a clear insight into the open positions, the NJO has analysed the participating NJO-members for the upcoming Summer projects and concluded that all vacancies are still open:

Violin, Viola, Cello, Double bass, Flute (Piccolo), Oboe (English horn), Clarinet (Bass clarinet), Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass trombone, Tuba, Percussion (Timpani), Harp.

How do I know I am (still) a NJO member?
Please check your personal portal, you can find the information about your membership there.

I was reserve musician but invited to play the project, am I now an NJO member?
When after the audition the candidate is selected as a reserve musician and the candidate is invited to join the orchestra, after participation in the NJO project, applicants studying in the Netherlands or Belgium and Dutch citizens studying at a music academy elsewhere will become a reserve musician for the next NJO project(s).

Will I become an NJO member by participating in the Jong Metropole Orchestra?
Participants in the Jong Metropole Orchestra cannot become a member of the NJO, but can become a member of the Jong Metropole Orchestra. Please check the Jong Metropole website (www.jongmetropole.nl).

I am a NJO member, I want to apply but do not wish to audition for a principle position
If you would like to apply without auditioning please log in to apply and tick the right boxes.

NJO members do not need to audition for new NJO projects and have preference in these. However, NJO members who wish to become (co-)principal (again) are required to audition for each new project. This includes the positions for principle and co-principle strings, first wind, first harp, timpani, bass trombone, tuba and piano. If the repertoire of a project requires special skills or solos for other instruments the NJO can decide to hold auditions to select musicians for these instruments as well.

How can I change my solo piece for the upcoming auditions? I cannot change it on my personal acount.
That is correct, it can only be changed manually by the orchestra manager. Please send an email with the name of your new solo piece to danielle@njo.nl.

What is the age limit for applying?
According to the audition rules musicians from 18 to 26 years of age (at the starting date of the next project) can apply/participate.
The starting date of the NJO Summer Tour is 23 July 2020, so if you are born before 24-07-1993 you cannot apply/participate, but if you are born on 23-07-1993 or after, you can.

Does the NJO reimburse travel costs?
-Travel expenses to the NJO auditions will not be reimbursed.
-Travel expenses during the projects are covered by NJO. However, participants must pay for their own the travelling expenses to (first day) and from (last day) the place(s) where a project is held.

Traveling by car will only be reimbursed when consulted with the orchestra manager and when travelling with more than one participant per car.

After the project you’ll receive a reimbursement form (Excel sheet) by email to reimburse the project related travel costs made during the project.
The deadline for submitting the reimbursement will be indicated in project information emails.

To process your reimbursement, we need attached to the reimbursement form the original train/bus tickets or a travel history of your OV-chip card or the original gas tickets. On the OV-chip card website you can download an overview of your travel history, including the travel expenses of every journey.

Can I audition on more than one instrument?
Yes, you can apply for more than one auxiliary instrument.

Do I also have to play a solo piece on my auxiliary instrument?
No solo piece is required for an auxiliary instrument, only for the main instrument.

I do not live or study in the Netherlands or Belgium, can I apply for the NJO?
Yes, but only for the Summer Festivals. Please apply in January/February for the video auditions for the Summer Festival and tick the box Video audition.
This extra round of video auditions (image and sound) for musicians studying at a music academy in Europe (apart from the Netherlands and Belgium) is for all positions still vacant after the auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium.

What are the rules / requirements for making the audition video?
A video audition (video plus audio) should be recorded in one take, may not be edited or altered and should contain the complete audition repertoire played by the applicant. The solo piece can be recorded in another take (approx. one part or minimum 4 minutes).

For a video audition the NJO recommends the playing of the solo piece with piano accompaniment as well (harp players and percussionists excepted). If it is a problem to manage this before the deadline, please play it without accompaniment, it is okay for now.
