Unfortunately there are no saxophones needed this summer festival.

How can I apply for the Jong Metropole Orchestra 2019?
Please check the Jong Metropole website (www.jongmetropole.nl) in April to find information about the project and how to apply.

What is the procedure to compile the Summer Festival orchestra(s)?
1. All NJO members who wish to participate in a next project need to apply again via their personal NJO portal.

NJO members who wish to become (co-)principal (again) are required to audition for each new project. This includes the positions for principle and co-principle strings, first wind, first harp, timpani, bass trombone, tuba and piano.

The application deadline for NJO members is the same as for non-NJO members: 18 March 2019.

2. NJO members who were placed on the NJO Winter Tour 2019 reserve list will be given preference over other NJO members.

3. NJO members who have taken part in an NJO project will be given preference for the next project (orchestration permitted). Members are not obliged to participate in each project.

4. Auditions will be held for all vacancies remaining after analysing the number of NJO member participants. Please check the NJO website after 20 March 2019 for the vacancies and auditions for your instrument.

5. An extra round of auditions will be held by video (image and sound), for all positions still vacant after the auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium, for musicians studying at a music academy in the rest of Europe (not in the Netherlands and Belgium). Application deadline: 13 May 2019.

When will the sheet music for the NJO Summer Festival 2019 be available?
The individual parts are available via your personal NJO portal. A link to the individual parts and the score will be send to all participants to download a study part later on. On the first rehearsal the sheet music (B4 size) will be on the desks.

General Questions:

I just read that the NJO Opera Orchestra project is cancelled but it is the only project which requires a pianist. What about my piano audition / application?
Because of the cancellation of the Opera Orchestra project there is no vacancy for Piano for the NJO Summer Festival 2019. The NJO will therefore have to cancel the piano auditions. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. We will keep your information in our database and know how to find you if we can offer a project concerning your instrument.

The age limit is set at between 18 to 26 years of age, how do I interpretate this?
According to the audition rules musicians from 18 to 26 years of age (at the starting date of the next project) can apply/participate.
The starting date of the NJO Summer Festival 2019 is 26-07-2019, so if you are born before 27-07-1992 you cannot apply/participate, but if you are born on 27-07-1992 or after you can.

Does the NJO reimburse travel costs?
Travel expenses during the projects are covered by NJO. However, participants must pay for their own the travelling expenses to (first day) and from (last day) the place(s) where a project is held.

Traveling by car will only be reimbursed when consulted with the orchestra manager and when travelling with more than one participant per car.

After the project you’ll receive a reimbursement form (Excel sheet) by email.
The deadline for submitting the reimbursement will be indicated in project information emails.

To process your reimbursement, we need attached to the reimbursement form the original train/bus tickets or a travel history of your OV-chip card or the original gas tickets. On the OV-chip card website you can download an overview of your travel history, including the travel expenses of every journey.

Logging in to apply or change your personal information
To apply, instead of filling in an application form, you will create a personal NJO account which you can read, adjust and consult whenever necessary. If you already have an account you can log in here. If you don't have an account yet you can read how to create one here

I would like to audition for the EUYO 2020. Can I go straight to the final round?

I saw other excerpts than earlier on the EUYO website, is that correct?
The EUYO is in the process of renewing their excerpts. For this year’s auditions they have renewed strings, woodwind and harp. Brass and percussion will be renewed next year. All the excerpts as we expect them for this year are online. You can find them here: www.euyo.eu/apply/auditions/orchestral-extracts/.

Who is in the jury for the EUYO auditions in the Netherlands?
- In the preliminary round it's an NJO jury consisting of the artistic manager, the orchestra manager and a specialist on your instrument.
- In the final round the EUYO jury consists of Oliver Kipp.
Note: There is only one jury member at the EUYO final audition round but when the final decisions are made all recordings will be listened to by a bigger EUYO commission.
Since 2008 Oliver Kipp works for the European Union Youth Orchestra as a tutor for violin and chamber music. He teaches at the Hanover Conservatory of Music and works for the Joseph Joachim Academy at the NDR Radiophilharmonic. He is a welcome guest at international competitions, teacher at masterclasses and member of the audition panel of the European Union Youth Orchestra.

What are the rules / requirements for making the audition video?

Yes but only for the Summer Festival. Please apply for the video auditions in for the Summer Festival 2019 and tick the box Video audition.
This extra round of video auditions (image and sound) for musicians studying at a music academy in Europe (apart from the Netherlands and Belgium) is for all positions still vacant after the auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium.

A video audition (video plus audio) should be recorded in one take, may not be edited or altered and should contain the complete audition repertoire played by the applicant. The solo piece can be recorded in another take (approx. one part or minimum 4 minutes).

For a video audition the NJO recommends the playing of the solo piece with piano accompaniment as well (harp players and percussionists excepted). If it is a problem to manage this before the deadline, please play it without accompaniment, it is okay for now.
