Ed Spanjaard

During the winter tour of 2020, Ed Spanjaard conducted the NJO Symphony Orchestra in Willem Pijper's Third Symphony among other pieces.

Ed Spanjaard is a versatile conductor and pianist who has earned his spurs in early music as well as broad symphonic repertoire and operas. He is also known for his many performances of contemporary works. Ed Spanjaard was the permanent conductor of the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest (Limburg Symphony Orchestra), Orkest van het Oosten (Netherlands Symphony Orchestra) and, from its foundation until 2019, of the Nieuw Ensemble. He conducted almost all orchestras in the Netherlands and many foreign orchestras. Spanjaard also conducted the music at the wedding of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and on his farewell as chief conductor of the LSO was knighted as Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau. Ed Spanjaard has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of the Netherlands several times with works by Brahms, Bruckner, Mozart, Debussy and Heppener, among others.
