The Russian-Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg is internationally renowned as a leading expert on Rachmaninoff. The Concertgebouw even calls him "a true Rachmaninoff prophet." It is therefore a great honor for the National Youth Orchestra to perform the Fourth Piano Concerto in G minor (1941 version) with this specialist. According to Giltburg, this concerto "has a musical color that is different from all his other works." The city of New York, with its new music and jazz, influences Rachmaninoff's music, building up to a finale full of hectic action, unstoppable force, and energy.
Equally "urban" is Night Flight, the third movement of Joey Roukens’ Symphony No.1 ‘Kaleidoscopic,’ originally written for the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. According to Roukens, the third movement is characterized by pronounced rhythms and high energy. Roukens describes it as "a sort of nocturnal rollercoaster ride over a bustling city. The music is dark yet colourful, full of erratic rhythms and grotesque and carnivalesque elements."
Igor Stravinsky, in his fairy-tale ballet Petrushka from 1947, drew on the notion of Mother Russia. In his musical portrayal of a boisterous country fair on the Russian countryside, you can hear not only cheerful revelers and dancing bears, but also a puppet coming to life. Musical merriment and lively movement define this performance under the direction of Antony Hermus.
