Eligible candidates
The NJO Summer Festival and Tour is accessible for

These live auditions are held in the Netherlands and Belgium. After a successful live audition and participation in an NJO project these musicians will become members of the NJO (see the audition rules). NJO members can take part in several projects without having to audition again.

These musicians can apply by video, for all positions still vacant after the live auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium. Accepted musicians can participate in projects during the NJO Summer Festival and Tour 2018.

Procedure orchestra arrangements
1. All NJO members who wish to participate in a next project need to apply again by filling out the application form and ticking the box: 'I am an NJO member and would like to join the NJO project without auditioning', or 'I am an NJO member and would like to join the NJO project. I hereby apply for a (co)principal position'.

NJO members who wish to become (co-)principal (again) are required to audition for each new project. This includes the positions for principle and co-principle strings, first wind, first harp, timpani, bass trombone, tuba and piano.

The application deadline for NJO Members is the same as for non-NJO-members: 1 March 2018.

2. NJO members who were placed on the NJO Winter Tour 2018 reserve list will be given preference over other NJO members.

4. Auditions will be held for all vacancies remaining after analysing the number of NJO member participants. Please check the NJO website regularly about the vacancies and auditions for your instrument.

5. An extra round of auditions will be held by video (image and sound), for all positions still vacant after the auditions in the Netherlands and Belgium, for musicians studying at a music academy in the rest of Europe (not in the Netherlands and Belgium). Application deadline: 18 April 2018.

Pianist
The NJO will provide a pianist to accompany the solo recital piece. Candidates are also allowed to bring their own pianist. With the exception of harp players and percussionists, the piano accompaniment must be used at the live auditions. The pianist provided by the NJO will practise with the candidate just before the auditions. Candidates are obliged to bring a score for the pianist.

Audition excerpts
All excerpts are available on the NJO website to download.
The audition excerpts to be prepared for the NJO Summer Festival 2018 can be found here.

Solo piece
At the audition candidates will be asked to play a prepared piece of their own choice (e.g. a movement from a concerto, sonata etc.) and a selection of the orchestral excerpts which are available on the NJO website. Percussionists will be asked to play a selection of the orchestral excerpts only (no solo piece).

Preparations
The key to a successful audition is thorough preparation of both the solo piece and the orchestral excerpts. Make time for your excerpts, listen to recordings of the works and/or take a look at the score. It is important that you play the excerpts accurately but also with sensitivity to the context of the whole piece, paying particular attention to accurate rhythm, tempi, dynamics and tuning.

Auxiliary instrument
Woodwind players do not have to play an auxiliary instrument (bass clarinet, Eb clarinet, piccolo flute, cor anglais, contrabassoon etc.). However, these instruments are often required in the orchestration. Applicants who also wish to apply for positions that include auxiliary instruments should tick the right box/boxes on the application form and prepare the required orchestral excerpts for the auxiliary instrument(s) as well. No solo piece is required for an auxiliary instrument, only for the main instrument.

Audition recordings and feedback
NJO will be filming all auditions. These recordings will be used to enable consultation between tutors in discussion of the audition results. The recordings will be stored securely and will not be used for any other purpose without the candidate’s permission. At the request of the candidate the recordings will be made available after the announcements of the audition results.
Applicants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on their audition after they have received the audition results.

The results of the auditions will be sent as soon as possible (within a week) after the last audition has finished or at the latest 27 April 2018.
It is not possible to obtain information about the audition results until after the final results have been sent to all applicants.
