NJO Summer Academy

Since 2001 the NJO has organised an international orchestra- and ensemble project: the NJO Summer Academy. This project focuses on talented young musicians, selected by means of intensive auditions. The NJO Summer Academy hopes to give these musicians a unique experience by bringing them in contact with music from different eras. Artistic director Reinbert de Leeuw is responsible for the programming of the NJO Summer Academy. Each year the NJO organizes a symphonic programme, a project for chamber orchestra, a project for modern ensemble and various chamber music groups.

Each year the NJO invites an internationally renowned composer to become composer in residence. Last year, British composer Oliver Knussen came to the Netherlands to work with the young musicians. His predecessors were György Kurtág (2001), Louis Andriessen (2002), Wolfgang Rihm (2003), Thomas Adčs (2004), Mauricio Kagel (2005), Sofia Gubaidulina (2006), George Benjamin (2007) and John Adams (2008). This year, Mark-Anthony Turnage will come to Apeldoorn! His Blood on the Floor will be the key work of the Summer Academy 2010. You can watch the entire piece as performed by the Ensemble Modern and listen to Mark-Anthony Turnage's comments (English/German) here.

The NJO Summer Academy also provides a programme in authentic performance practice. Classical and romantic repertoire is played on authentic wind instruments and string instruments with gut strings and classical bows (on loan from the Nationaal Muziekinstrumentenfonds). Starting 2009 the NJO Orchestra of the 19th Century will be directed by Richard Egarr.

The NJO Summer Academy has had various international successes. During the renowned Edinburgh International Festival in 2006 it was rewarded with the Herald Angel for most impressive performance during the festival.
