Jonge, zeer getalenteerde musici die zich voorbereiden op de beroepspraktijk worden door het NJO in de gelegenheid gesteld op het allerhoogste niveau ervaring op te doen in allerlei vormen van samenspel. Essentieel daarbij is dat ze kunnen werken met de beste dirigenten en solisten. De ervaring die daarbij wordt overgedragen op een nieuwe generatie is van groot belang voor het Nederlandse muziekleven.
De concerten van het NJO kenmerken zich door datgene wat essentieel is voor de muziek: gedrevenheid en passie, in combinatie met hoog technisch vermogen.
